SSNV-MDG KNOWLEDGE ORGANIZATION AND LINKS DIRECTORY
"In the beginning, the cosmos was a shapeless, chaotic mass, with Google brooding over the dark vapors ....". Indeed, Google (or, preferably, Google Advanced) is a good place to start when searching for information online. There is also Google Books, Google Scholar, Google Translate, Google Maps, and Google Images. But there is life after Google, especially if the desired information requires a complex query or is buried somewhere in the "invisible web." A huge number of specialized directories and search engines are now available to help the researcher converge on the right file. Below are links to some of those I have found most useful to support Solidarity, Sustainability, and Non-Violence research. It is now possible to customize the Google search engine to seek SSNV-related content:

PUBLISH OR PERISH (POP)
PoP Tool: PUBLISH OR PERISH, by Anne-Wil Harzing, University of Melbourne, Australia, retrieves and analyzes academic citations from the
Advanced Google Scholar Search and, for a given author (or journal, or set of keywords) calculates the total number of papers, total number of citations per paper, and several indices of research productivity and quality. These numerical indices may be useful mostly for academic evaluations, but just getting a list of papers published (1000 max) is of great value for the online researcher who needs to find out quickly who has published what, when, and where in a given knowledge domain. The program installs easily and works like a charm. The retrieved citations are presented as a table amenable to sorting by author, journal, and year of publication. Clicking on any citation brings up the Google Scholar listing, so one more click and you are reading the paper in your browser.

WORDS EXTENDED (WordsEx)
WordsEx Tool: The tool is freeware developed by Glenn Scheper. The following abbreviated description is adapted from his web site: Words Extended (WordsEx) is a powerful Internet text information discovery, retrieval, extraction, and display tool. It includes ranking heuristics that speed you to the choicest information. Minimal motion right hand operation, smooth scrolling and big fonts make it easy. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com. Windows 2000, XP, or Vista users can try WordsEx immediately by clicking HERE. It comes with a concise but clearly written user's guide as well as some additional software documentation. The tool can be used to find, retrieve, and rank online information on any subject matter, but several sample analyses supported by WordsEx are provided in Glenn's page.
The knowledge organization model that has been chosen for
The Pelican Web and the
Solidarity, Sustainability, and Non-Violence newsletter is a variation of the
Knowledge Map of Chaim Zins. This is work in progress, and will continue to evolve, but the current taxonomies and links organization are shown in the next table. The columns are defined as follows: item number, mega-discipline, discipline, specialty, sub-specialty (or acronym), MDG , and link name/content. The symbol "~" in a cell of a column indicates relevance to "all" categories in that column. The 5-dimensional taxonomy is shaping up as follows:
Mega-Disciplines
Divine Wisdom
Empirical Knowledge
Expert Knowledge
General Knowledge
Human Habitat
Human Sciences
Integrated Info
Science & Tech
Teamwork Info
